Spotlight on Zach Porath
January 31, 2018
Here’s our latest ‘Spotlight on’, a quick-fire round of Q&A where we get to meet the people who make CloudSense great.
It’s a fast, fun way to learn a little bit more about CloudSense’s people – from what makes them want to come to work every day – to the meal they’d pick before they met their maker on death row.
Today we get to know a man who is a jack-of-all-trades and master of most others, Group Financial Planning and Analysis Manager, Zach Porath.
Name, Position & CloudSense Office:
Zach Porath, Group Financial Planning and Analysis Manager, London
What do you do at CloudSense on a day to day basis?
I do a variety of different things from answering strategic questions, forecasting for the future, building reports from management and consolidating into one. I analyse our financial accounts and look at variants analysis trying to make sense of the company’s transactions and the impacts it will have on our financials planning and strategy. I was heavily involved in the Vector Capital investment deal working on the acquisition on a day to day basis.
How long have you worked here?
A year and a quarter.
What was your background before joining?
I’ve worked in investment banking and asset management. Initially I started my accounting career working in the accounting and finance team working for an investment manager in New Zealand for 3 years. Then I moved to London and worked for an investment asset manager and was a management accountant on 5 portfolios consisting of 362 companies. I contracted for a short time for Publicis before coming to CloudSense.
What’s your favorite thing about the CloudSense office?
It is set out in a highly collaborative way;)
When was your best day at CloudSense and why?
The day we signed the Vector Capital deal because it was a combination of a year’s worth of work and I was stoked for the company, the founders and having Vector Capital joining us. I was fortunate enough to be able to work from end to end from a finance perspective, whilst it was tough and a lot of work it was so worth it in the end.
Describe a ‘CloudSense person’ in 3 words…
Detailed, Gregarious and Diligent.
What makes you want to come to work every day?
Its enjoyable, engaging and a challenge. It’s a growing company and has a lot of challenges ahead. There is no reason i can see why we can’t produce with the global team we have got and that’s one of the luxuries of CloudSense. We are in a space to develop and especially with Vector Capital’s backing we can really make headways and expand in a way a lot of companies don’t have the opportunity to.
If you could switch jobs with anyone else at CloudSense, whose job would you have?
Ian Chick (CloudSense COO) – He has one of the most interesting jobs, he has a touchpoint on every single part of the business and knows what’s going on. His role has depth where you really need to understand the product, the customer and what we’re delivering. From my perspective it would be a interesting to understand the projects and implementations with the touchpoints Ian has. He’s able to understand the value we are creating for our customers.
Where do you see CloudSense in 5 years’ time?
North of 110m AAR, touch points in 6 continents, rapid expansion, massive American market expansion, a more refined and well developed product capable of future technology and a leader, looking to expand and be the first in SaaS to take the Antarctic Market by storm;)
Where’s your hometown?
Auckland, New Zealand
Where’s your favorite place in the world?
Takapuna New Zealand, I use to live and work there, it’s my home. It’s beautiful and I love the beach there.
What’s your favorite book?
The Power of One by Bryce Courtney.
And favorite film?
The Accountant because its a true representation of what I do on a day to day basis…
What would be your desert island DVD box set?
The Punisher season 1 because it’s awesome.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
It would have to be excel spreadsheets and the NZ All Black haka.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Super Saiyan transformer because it can fly, shoot from its hands, transport itself, travel at the speed of light and your hair and eyes change color.
What would your death row meal be?
Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?
Tiger Woods, Rich Froning, Richie McCaw, Dad, Maverick and Goose, Rob Waddell, Sheryll Sandberg, Justine Hennin.
Tiger Woods – Absolute legend and possibly the man who could make the impossible happen.
Rich Froning & Rob Waddell – Legendary and methodical athletes who dominated their sports for a long time.
Richie McCaw – Needless to say, he’s the most ruthless and professional rugby player ever.
Maverick and Goose – Characters from the greatest movie of all time – and they would arrive in an F-14 Tomcat (you did say a dinner party;) ).
Sheryll Sandberg – COO and legend – must be tough to be at the top in FB.
Justine Hennin – Can think of no better person that personifies the underdog mentality and her class transcended gender to even make the guys scared with her return and backhand.
Dad – Well he’s just a good bloke.
Who would play you in the film of your life?
Ben Affleck, because he looks like me.
If you were guaranteed to be successful in a different profession, what would you do?
I would be an engineer and build/create a company capable of building anything I wanted in the world.
